Cantona BookCantona – The Rebel Who Would be King, by Philippe Auclair

This definitive account by Phillipe Auclair on one of football’s great characters, a legend of the modern game, Eric Cantona, is a must read for any football fan.

A fascinating biography by one of football’s top journalist, Phillipe Auclair, who interviewed more than 200 central figures in Cantona’s life. The player who’s career started under Guy Roux at Auxerre, where he caught the eye of many, and from then on, played for numerous clubs in France including Marseilles, where life was tough, with actions on and off the pitch controversial.

He was banned from playing for the French side, where he’d normally do so well, after refusing to play under coach Henri Michel after he had dropped him from the side. And while at Nîmes, threw a ball at a referee. Who could forget the ‘Kung fu’ kick at Selhurt Park years later.

It was in England where he enjoyed most success, some with Leeds but mainly at Manchester United where to this day fans remember him as ‘King Eric’. George Best once said: “I’d give all the champagne I’ve ever drunk to be playing alongside Cantona in a big European match at Old Trafford.”

This biography is not like any other; none are as insightful as this, nor as enjoyable a read. This is strongly recommended to anyone, not just United fans, but to all who love football. A must read!
